More about the Helicopter
Tour |
|
| |
 |
Seeing the whole island of Kauai from the air is incredible. So much of the island is almost impossible to see any other way. It is easy to appreciate the variation of the climate on Kauai too. From rainforests to the dry Westside. Waterfalls, cliffs, fields of sugarcane and taro. |

Safari Helicopters
is owned and run by Preston Myers. He is a very experienced pilot
and committed to safety. Safari is committed to following the maximum
standards on certification and training. Pilots have over 10,000 hours
each of experience. They have Airline Transport Pilots Ratings. Safari
is FAA part 135 certified. On Kauai the ruggedness of the Island that
makes it so interesting to view also makes it more challenging to
fly. You want a Helicopter company with high ratings and experienced
pilots. Most of these pictures were taken from the air in a Safari
Helicopter. I feel safe flying with Safari.

Safari flies two helicopters.( ASTAR 350BA and ASTAR 350B2-7) Both of the helicopters are six passenger helicopters. They both video tape the tour. Copies of this are an additional cost. |
| |
The tour starts at
Lihue airport and goes clockwise around the island. Safari calls their
tour a Waterfall Safari and it is. They try to emphasize the waterfalls
of Kauai. There is going to be some variation in flights because the
weather here changes so much.

Make sure to bring
a camera with you. I would recommend taking some pictures of the highlights
of the trip but just sit back and enjoy the ride too. If you are concentrating
on taking pictures the whole time you are going to miss much of the
ride. I should know I am usually spending too much time taking pictures.
Please use the Question
Form if you need any additional information.

Some Highlights of
the Tour |
|
| |
 |
Hanapepe Valley
Up Hanapepe valley there are many waterfalls the most famous is probably
Manawaipuna Falls. It was in the opening scenes of Jurassic Park.
It can also only be seen from the air unless you have some connections
and a lot of time to get near it by land. |
|
|
| |
Waimea Canyon
The bottom of Waimea Canyon is one of the driest areas of Kauai and the top is one of the wettest. The Canyon itself is a very beautiful with some very good observation points along the way,
From the helicopter you can fly through the canyon. |
 |
| |
|
Kalalau
Kalalau
is the largest valley along the Na Pali Coast. You can drive a car
to the rim and look down at it. You can take a boat ride and look
up at it from the ocean. You can fly through it on a helicopter. Or
you can hike in a very long and marrow trail. I recommend checking
it out as many ways as you can. For more pictures of Kalalau try looking
at "Kauai
Guide - Kalalau". |
|
|
| |
Na Pali Coast
The
Na Pali Coast is one of the highlights of Kauai. It is also on the
dry side of the island. This means that it usually cooperates with
the helicopters. The Na Pali Coast can also be seen by
boat. For more information about Napali see the "Photo
Album - Na Pali" and "Kauai
Guide - Na Pali". |
 |
|
|
| |
 |
Waialeale Crater
Waialeale
is the central mountain of Kauai. It gets over 400 inches of rain
per year. It is just short of a mile high and the Eastern side has
a crater with about 3000 ft cliffs. This can make for some good waterfalls.
They are not always accessible. It can often be rained out. This is
where you want the experienced pilot. They will know when you don't
want to go into the crater. See the "Kauai
Guide - Waialeale" for more information. |
|
|
| |
Hanalei
Valley
Hanalei
Valley is a major area of taro cultivation. The the valley is filled
with taro loi. It is also a bird preserve. Water birds thrive on the
taro loi and Hanalei stream environment. The upper valley is full
of waterfalls. Check out the "Kauai
Guide - Hanalei" for more information. |
